Department of Journalism

Keeping the growing demand for creative and competent talent in the fast growing media industry in mind, the Department offers Journalism as a subject in the three year B.A. Program. It imparts strong theoretical base and provides practical knowledge through well established Multimedia Studio, Community Radio, Editing Lab and in-house practice journals.

Academic Insight Magazine recognized the department as one of the best media institutions in the year 2020.

India Today Magazine (June 2020) in its ‘All new comprehensive India Today-MDRA national survey with new streams’ has conferred the department with 8th in Lowest Course Fee, top 4th for best value for money and 22nd position out of top 25 colleges in India.

Highlights of the Department

  • Practical exposure through full-pledged Multimedia Studio and Community Radio Station & editing lab facilitated in the department.
  • Video production house practice through regular video content creation activities like ‘Nammura Varthe’ (Weekly news bulletin running from 2008. Which gives on-ground training in news reporting, anchoring, voice-over, scriptwriting and video editing), documentary, short film, segments, personality interviews, corporate video etc.
  • Print media activity training through a daily gazette. It includes translation and other media writing training.
  • Encourage the students to contribute write-ups, articles, features and news reports to various state-level newspapers.
  • Digital Media content creation training through Wikipedia (Kannada Content) and through managing social media pages of the department.

Scheme & Syllabus
  • Srujana is one of the club activities of the department and started in the year 2014. In this activity forum Weekly Roundup, Debate, Current Affair Analysis, Quiz, Headline Writing Competitions, Group Discussions, Writing Skill Discussions, Guest Lectures, Alumni Interactions, Creative Productions and other activities are conducted.
  • Department nurtures students with practical training in print, audio, visual and new media.
  • Nammura Varthe, is half an hour electronic news bulletin which trains students in TV news reporting, camera execution, scripting, anchoring, voice over and video editing.
  • Radio Ninada 90.4 – community radio station is functioning under the department of journalism and mass communication providing training in all wings of audio production.
  • Students under the guidance of faculty script and upload various types of research articles for Wikipedia platform.
  • Regular contributions including Manada Maatu (Interview series), documentaries, short films, PSA, web-series, corporate videos produced by SDM Multimedia Studio, functioning under the department for the social media platforms.
  • The department extends its support and guidance in organizing and managing press meets, preparing press notes and helps to establish media relations to other institutions and organizations of the community.
  • It also offers orientation and training to the schools and other institutions of the Taluk and it furnishes documentation services on demand.
  • Department provides platform to the community by recognizing rural problems, identifying latent talents and publishing success stories to inspire public. It also preserves local art and culture by documenting and publishing the contents in virtual form.
  • Department is contributing for academic arena through conducting research on thrust areas of journalism and mass communication by the faculties as well as students.
  • Seminars:
    1. Department organized UGC Sponsored National Seminar on “Media Power in Politics” on October 22nd and 23rd 2010.
    2. Department organized a National Seminar on “Journalism & Society” on March 21st and 22nd, 2013.
    3. Department organised a National Seminar in association with avadhimag.com on “Social Networking Media: Boon or Bane?” on March 7th and 8th 2014.
  • Dr. Bhaskar Hegde awarded PhD entitled “ಪತ್ರಿಕೆಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ಔಪಚಾರಿಕ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ: ಕನ್ನಡ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ದೈನಿಕಗಳ ತೌಲನಿಕ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ” under the guidance of Prof. G P Shivaram, Retd. Professor in Journalism and Mass Communication at Mangalore University, Mangalore.
