Department of Economics and Rural Development

Established in 1966

The department presents a niche to the undergraduate students to develop the analytical skills needed to work successfully in today’s rapidly globalising world, and choose a career in economics, financial research, banking, finance, sales, marketing, and economic journalism. We offer two subjects: Economics and Rural Development as optionals in the B A Programme. Students and staff are involved seriously in Research on thrust areas such as Microfinance, Rural and Agricultural Economics.

  • 27-28 March 2012: National Seminar on “Lessons Learnt from IQAC: Moving Forward and Making a Difference” was coordinated by Dr.A.Jaya Kumar Shetty. Prof M. Ananda Krishnan,  Former Chairperson, IIT, Kanpur,Chairperson, Madras Institute of Development Studies, Chennai inaugurated the Seminar
  • 19-21, March, 2013: Department of Economics of SDM College, Ujire in association with Department of Development Studies, Kannada University, Hampi organized three days National workshop on “Development in Rights Perspectives” Dr.D.VeerendraHeggade inaugurated the Seminar and Senior Advocate of Supreme Court and renouned activist Mr.Ravivarma Kumar delivered Key Note Address.
  • 26-01-2013: Mangalore University level workshop on “Research Methodology”, Prof.Dr.ChandraPoojary, Dept of Development Studies, Kannada University, Hampi was the resourceperson.
  • 21-01-2014: Department of Economics In association with Mangalore University Economics Association Organised National Seminar on “Agricultural Marketing: Issues& Challenges”, sponsored by Syndicate Bank, Canara Bank and Vijaya Bank.
  • 21-01-2015: National Seminar on “Literacy and Development”. Dr.N.K.Thingalaya, former Chairman, Syndicate Bank delivered the keynote address.
  • 12-02-2016: National Conference on “Inclusive Growth: Challenges and Strategies” in association with Mangalore University Economics Association
  • 23-03-2016: UGC Sponsored National Seminar on “Microfinance with special reference to Business Correspondent Model in Financial Inclusion and Empowering the Vulnerable” on 23 March 2016
  • 24-01-2018: Organized “ECO-SRUJAN”, an Intercollegiate Academic Meet for the UG and PU students of Economics.
  • 21-01-2019: One day National Seminar on “Social Development in India: Challenges and Strategies”, organised by the department of Economics of SDM College in association with Department of Development Studies of Hampi Kannada University,  Mangalore University Economics Association and HAMANA Research Centre on 21st January 2019. 12 resource persons, 64 Staff delegates from 33 institutions, 168 student delegates attended the seminar. 24 researchers presented the papers.
  • 21-01-2020: National Seminar on “Economics of Lord Mahaveera: Revisited” organised in association with Prasaranga of Kannada University, Hampi, Mangalore University Economics Association and Ha Ma Na Research Centre. Prof.S.C.Ramesh, Hon. Vice Chancellor, Kannada University, Hampi inaugurated the Seminar. H.H.Swasthi Sri CharakeerthiBattarakaSwameeji, Jain Mutt, Moodbidri graced the occasion. Dr.BipinDoshi, National Vice President, JITO delivered the Keynote address.Shri.D.Harshendra Kumar, Secretary, SDME Society, Ujire, Dr.G.V.Joshi, former member of Karnataka Planning Board, Dr.B.Yashovarma(Secretary, SDME Society) Dr.Prashanth.H.D (Director, Prasaranga, Kannada University, Hampi), Dr.Joseph, President, AMUCT were the guests of honour.
