Exploring History of Periodic Table

In order to commemorate the “International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements (IYPT2019)” which marks the 150th anniversary of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements, the department of Chemistry organized a special talk on “A Fascinating Design History of Periodic Table of Elements: A tribute to Dmitri Mendeleev” by Prof.B.S.Sherigara, Former Vice Chancellor of Kuvempu University on 27th December 2019.

Prof. Sherigara elaborated on how the Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev came to prominence with his tabular diagram of known elements called periodic table. He said, the world got a glimpse of the brilliance behind the periodic table when scientists later discovered the elements that filled the spaces left in the Mendeleev’s chart for elements that were yet to be discovered.

He shared fascinating stories behind the discovery of some elements and motivated the students of Chemistry that one day they could also discover some elements and contribute to Mendeleev’s table..

Presiding over the function, Prof. Satheeshchandra S said it’s the responsibility of every student to know the importance of periodic table and programmes like this provide an opportunity to knowledge sharing.

As a part of social responsibility of the department, pamphlets on creating awareness about water conservation and no usage of plastic among students of schools, college and public were released on the occasion.

The programme was witnessed by Prof.B.Shivarama Holla, PG Department of Chemistry , Prof.N.Dinesh Chowta, Principal, SDM PU College, all the members of the faculty of the Department of Chemistry and about 150 students of Chemistry.
