Memories of Karnad – A rhetoric and theatrical tribute

“Karnad always created literary masterpieces that were objective in nature and never clashed with real-time history”, said the Director of Manasa Culture Research Centre Shimoga and awardee of Karnataka Sahitya Academy Award, Prof. Rajendra Chenni. He was addressing the gathering at the honor event for Girish Karnad organized by the Department of English at SDM College Ujire.

“Karnad always created research based literature. His work ‘Tughlaq’ is a good example to validate his sense of objectivity and consideration for history when it came to creating historic plays. Owing to European and Indian influences seen in his plays, his works are relevant even today. He even questions the established norms from history in his work, which is validation to the extent of study and comprehensive efforts he put in researching his topics first”, he added.

After the formal event, a mono-play written by Karnad, ‘Hoovu’ was presented by the ‘Hongirana’ theatre team from Shimoga, under the direction of Dr. Satish Sasvehalli. A documentary featuring the life and journey of Karnad, ‘Nadedu Banda Daari’ by K M Chaitanya was screened at the occasion.

Journals created by the students of English department of the college were released at the occasion. Faculty members and students from various colleges of Dakshina Kannada took part in the event.
