One-Day District-Level Exhibition and Inter-Collegiate Fest
The Rovers and Rangers Unit of SDM College (Autonomous), Ujire, in collaboration with the Bharat Scouts and Guides Dakshina Kannada District Association and the Belthangady Local Association, hosted “Pramuka-2K25,” a One-Day District-Level Exhibition and Inter-Collegiate Fest on January 6, 2025.The event showcased the essence of teamwork, leadership, and holistic education, drawing participation from across the district.
Inauguration HighlightsThe program was inaugurated by Supriya Harshendra Kumar, a member of the SDM Educational Society, Ujire. In her speech, she emphasized the importance of integrating extra-curricular activities, such as Scouts and Guides, into education. Highlighting the Sanskrit proverb “Paropakartham Idam Shareeram” (this body is meant for serving others), she stated, “Bharat Scouts and Guides work toward holistic personality development. Alongside academics, such activities are essential in shaping values and preparing students for the future.” She further stressed the role of youth in nation-building and urged students to uphold their values while facing challenges. “Values enhance dignity. May Scouts and Guides inspire you to face challenges courageously and live harmoniously with nature,” she added.
Guest Speaker Ashwith Jain, Alumni of the College and Secretary of the KPCC, and Vice chairman Minority dept, spoke about the transformative potential of youth. He remarked, “Rovers and Rangers are not just team members but leaders. They possess the ability to solve problems and become role models, bringing positive change to society.”
BM Tumbe, District Commissioner (Scouts) of Bharat Scouts and Guides, encouraged the attendees, stating, “Childhood is beautiful; make it sweeter and welcome youth with values. As ambassadors of Scouts and Guides, embrace values that shape your character.”
Prathim Kumar K.S., District Secretary of Bharat Scouts and Guides, highlighted the organization’s global presence and its efforts in shaping students into responsible citizens. He congratulated SDM College for hosting the event, emphasizing its impact on fostering human values and character building.
The Principal of SDM College, Dr. B.A. Kumar Hegde, presided over the event. In his address, he said, “The greatest service is serving humanity. True nation-building lies in shaping young minds. In today’s world, where sensitivity is often at risk, organizations like Scouts and Guides gain significance by nurturing values and character among the youth.”
Program Features and ActivitiesThe day began with the hoisting of the Scouts flag and prayers in the college premises. The exhibition displayed various scouting-related artifacts, including:
- Adventure games.
- Bamboo and rope structures like ladders, treehouses, and tents.
- Creative models showcasing survival skills and teamwork.
Program Coordinator Ganavi D., Ranger Leader, explained the significance of the event’s name, “Pramuka,” derived from the Indonesian language, meaning youth who love work or are ready for it and welcomed the gathering. Program Coordinator Rover Scout Leader Prasad Kumar presented the vote of thanks. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from various groups, including: Rovers, Rangers, Rover Scout Leaders, and Ranger Leaders from multiple colleges. Scouts, Guides, Cubs, Bulbuls, and Bunnies from local SDM schools.Scout Masters and Guide Captains, who contributed to the event’s success. Student leaders Harshini and Dileep represented the Rovers and Rangers unit, adding energy and inspiration to the event.
Highlights of the Closing CeremonyThe program featured Shri Rajesh Pai, Director of Shri Dharmasthala Siri Gramodyoga, as the chief guest. He commended the Rovers and Rangers for their dedication and discipline, saying, "The uniform of Rovers and Rangers commands immense respect. Leadership and values such as punctuality learned here lay a strong foundation for life."
Bharat Raj K., Assistant State Organizational Commissioner of Bharat Scouts and Guides, emphasized the significance of integrating life lessons with academics. He remarked, "Activities in Rovers and Rangers instill life skills and foster a close relationship with nature, helping students cultivate essential qualities."
Presiding over the event, Dr. Vishwanath P., Dean of the Postgraduate Center, highlighted the unique role of Rovers and Rangers in holistic education. He stated, "Education provides knowledge, but Rovers and Rangers impart life skills. These activities help students develop personality traits such as simplicity, humility, punctuality, and essential life values."
Competitions and Results Various competitions were organized, fostering healthy competition and teamwork among students from different colleges: First Place: Excellent College, Moodbidri. Second Place: Vivekananda College, Puttur. “Pramuk 2025” concluded with high praise for its focus on leadership, community values, and teamwork. It reinforced the importance of blending academics with life skills and values, setting a benchmark for the Rovers and Rangers unit at SDM College.
