Ujire, July 18 — “Yakshagana is a collective art form that flourishes only when it is learned and passed on to others,” said renowned Yakshagana Talamaddale performer Ashok Bhat of Ujire, while inaugurating the Yakshagana training activities at the SDM College (Autonomous), Ujire’s Kalakendra on Thursday.
Addressing the students, Bhat emphasized that Yakshagana is not a solo performance but a group art that requires deep dedication, love, and devotion. “We must not only learn the art but also take the responsibility of spreading it across communities,” he added.
Praising the Yakshagana training center of SDM College, he remarked, “This center is a hub of diverse cultural learning. Involvement in the arts nurtures concentration and aids holistic development. Embrace the path of art and bring pride to both the college and yourselves.”
Newly appointed coordinator of the Kalakendra and Assistant Professor in the Kannada Department, Dr. Naganna D.A., spoke on the occasion and welcomed the newly enrolled students. “Art extends its hand to everyone, but it chooses only a few,” he reflected.
Dr. Sridhar Bhat, Academic Registrar of SDM College, presided over the function and recalled the institution’s earlier days. “In the past, despite student interest, there was no structured training for Yakshagana. Today, from costume and makeup to performance, everything is well-organized. Students now have the resources to grow as both artists and informed audiences,” he noted.
Student Amogh Shankar presented a report on the achievements of the Kalakendra over the past year, highlighting awards and recognitions earned by student artists. Students who had the highest attendance in Yakshagana classes last year were honored, and Ashok Bhat was felicitated for his contributions.
Former coordinator Dr. Sudhir K.V., dance instructors Chaitra Bhat and Vinyas Bhandari, Sanskrit faculty Shreyas Palyande, and Commerce lecturer Sachin were present on the dais.
Yakshagana trainer Arun Kumar Dharmasthala welcomed the gathering, Lavanya proposed the vote of thanks, and Ankita compered the event.
The program marked the formal start of another vibrant year for the Kalakendra, reinforcing SDM College’s commitment to preserving and promoting traditional art forms.
