In commemoration of National Science Day celebrated in India on February 28th every year, the departments of Physics and Chemistry organised Intercollegiate Science Competitions “Vijnaana Sinchana -2020” on 3rd February. The inaugurator, Dr.Satheeshchandra. S, the Principal, speaking on the theme of National Science Day 2020 – ‘Women in Science’ expressed that the theme is well adopted in our institution as the girl students in our college are playing a dominant role in all our science activities. He also congratulated both the departments for organising the programme which provided a forum to bring out various skills and talents of the students and advised the students to make use of the opportunities, focus on a particular area and try to get expertise in that. Dr. Kumara Hegde. B.A, Head of the Botany Department and Co-ordinator Star College Scheme of the College called upon the students to inculcate three C’s – Curiosity, Creativity and Commitment in their life. Out of curiosity, with a creative approach if we are committed we will be able to do something different which is contributing to the uplift of the society, he said. Prof.S.N Kakathkar, Dean of Science and Convener of the programme, welcomed the gathering. Dr.Vishwanatha P. Head of the Department of the Chemistry and Convener of the programme was present on the occasion. About 76 students from various colleges of Mangalore university region participated in 8 different competitions held. As a part of social responsibility and environmental conservation of the departments, saplings were distributed to the participating colleges.
Dr.B.Ganapayya, Dean, PG Studies, SDM PG Centre, Ujire and Chief Guest of the valedictory ceremony distributed prizes to winners. The students of Poornaprajna College, Udupi and Shri Venkataramana College, Bantwal bagged Overall and Runners up Championships respectively. Mr.Sachin Katte of Govindadasa College Surathkal has emerged as the Star of Vijnaana Sinchana. The event was sponsored by Department of Biotechnology, Government of India under the Star College Scheme.
