Department of Economics and Rural Development

The Department of Economics, established in 1966 and offering Rural Development since 1977, boasts well-qualified, PhD-holding, and experienced faculty. They prioritize a learner-centered approach, focusing on experiential learning, and extension, and offer free consultancy. Students and staff are involved seriously in Research on thrust areas such as Microfinance, Rural and Agricultural Economics. The department regularly hosts International/National/State-level seminars and employs diverse student-centric methods like field visits, student research projects, and On the Job Training. This strong foundation ensures students receive an engaging, practical, and research-oriented education.

Association and Activities

Seminars/ Workshops Organised

  • 17-10-2025: Organized a State-Level Intercollegiate Competition on 17 October 2025. The program was inaugurated by Ms. Dhanya Prabhu, Fellowship Holder, Department of Panchayath Raj and Rural Development, Government of Karnataka, and a proud alumna of the department. In her inaugural address she encouraged the students to make the most of experiential learning opportunities available on campus. Prof. Vishwanatha P, Principal of the college, presided over the inaugural function. A total of 15 colleges participated in various academic competitions organized as part of the event. St. Aloysius (Deemed to be University) emerged as the Overall Champion, while KSS College, Subrahmanya secured the Runners-Up Trophy. In the Inter-Class Dance Competition, III B.Voc. emerged as the winner, and II BCA was declared the runner-up.
  • 14-08-2025: In association with Kukke Sri Subrahmanyeshwara College, organized a Book and Edited volume release along with a guest lecture on “Inclusive Growth in Kautilya’s Arthashastra” on 14th August 2025. Dr Satheeshchandra S, Secretary of SDME Society, released the book “A Search for Inclusive Growth in Arthashastra”, authored by Dr G. V. Joshi, Former Professor of Economics, Mangalore University, and Prof. Ramesh Salian, Professor of Economics, JNU New Delhi, as well as the Edited Volume “Rural Development for Job Creation and Poverty Alleviation in Emerging Economies”, Edited by Dr Mahesh Kumar Shetty H and co-edited by Dr Ganaraja K. He also extended his best wishes for the programme’s success. Prof. Vishwanatha P, Principal, presided over the function. Dr G. V. Joshi delivered a special lecture on the theme, addressing students and participants. Dr Dinesha P. T., Principal of KSS College, Subrahmanya, was the Guest.
  • 17-01-2025: Organized Two-Day Multi-Disciplinary International Conference on ‘Rural Entrepreneurship in Emerging Economies – A Way Forward’ on 17th and 18th January 2025. The conference aimed to bring together experts, scholars, and practitioners to discuss innovative approaches and strategies to foster rural entrepreneurship in emerging economies. The conference was inaugurated by Dr. S. Satheeshachandra, Secretary, SDME Society®, Ujire, who highlighted the critical role of entrepreneurial activities in driving rural development. He emphasized that fostering entrepreneurship in rural areas could create sustainable economic opportunities and improve livelihoods. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Kaliappa Kalirajan, Emeritus Professor, The Australian National University, Canberra, Australia. He presented a global perspective on rural entrepreneurship by referencing data from institutions such as the IMF and the World Bank. His address focused on opportunities for job creation and innovation in rural areas, offering valuable insights into global trends and best practices. During the two-day conference, 65 research papers were presented across three parallel technical sessions. Scholars and researchers from various academic and professional backgrounds shared their findings on key issues related to rural entrepreneurship, innovation, and sustainable business models. The presentations facilitated knowledge-sharing and discussions on policy frameworks, financial models, and technological advancements in rural business development.
  • 01-10-2024: Organized ECO-VISION 2K24, a one-day inter-collegiate and inter-department educational and cultural fest, on 1st October 2024. The event brought together students from multiple institutions and departments for a day of learning, competition, and cultural exchange. The event was inaugurated by Sri Rajesh Pai, Proprietor of Sandhya Groups, Ujire, who addressed the participants and encouraged them to focus on developing skills and competencies in addition to academic achievements. His inspiring words motivated the students to strive for excellence in all aspects of their lives. A total of 10 PU colleges participated in the inter-collegiate competitions. The performances were outstanding, showcasing the talents and abilities of students from across the region. SDM PU College, Ujire emerged as the overall champion, securing the Champions’ Trophy, while Government PU College, Belthangady claimed the Runners-Up Trophy. In the inter-class competitions within SDM College, the III BCA class won the Champions’ Trophy, demonstrating their versatility and excellence in both educational and cultural aspects of the event.
  • 02-05-2024: In association with Chanakya University Bangalore an Interactive session on –“Crafting an Impactful Profile” was organized on 2/05/2024. Dr. Chetan Singai, Chief Consultant and Convener, National Education Framework, Ministry of Education, GOI. and Dean School of Law, Governance and Public Policy, Chanakya University Bangalore was the resource person to address the students on the preparation of impactful profile. In connection with the same Dr. Singai also drawn the attention of the students towards the need of skill updates and career opportunities in the competitive world. Sri. Venkatesh and Sri. Kumaraswamy, the faculty of Chanakya University were also present. The event was benefited to 150 students.
  • 03-02-2024: Organised One day National Conference in association with Research and Development Cell on the topic ‘Viksit Bharath@2047: Problems and Prospects’ on 3rd February 2024. Prof. Krishna Bhatta, Chancellor, Central University, Odissa, inaugurated the Conference in the presence of Sri Prathap Simha Nayak, Member of Legislative Assembly, Government of Karnataka, Dr G V Joshi, Professor of Economics (Retd.), Mangalore University and Dr S Satheeshchandra, Secretary, SDME Society. Dr B A Kumara Hegde, Principal, SDM College (Autonomous), Ujire presided over the inaugural session.
  • 07-11-2023: Organized a guest lecture on the topic ‘Skill Gaps in Social Science Education’. Resource Person Prof. Ramesh Salian, Centre for Economic Studies & Planning, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, in his address advised students to enhance their skills in the fields such as computer, communication, data sciences, AI etc while pursuing education. He also suggested students to increase their curiosity in all the subjects and reading habits for knowledge enhancement. About 100 students of Economics and RD participated in the programme and got benefitted.
  • 29 & 30 March 2023: Organised ICSSR sponsored Two Day Multidisciplinary National Seminar in association with RSVP, New Delhi on “Indigenous Practices in Higher Education in India: Steps Ahead” held on 29th & 30th March 2023.
  • 21-01-2020: National Seminar on “Economics of Lord Mahaveera: Revisited” organised in association with Prasaranga of Kannada University, Hampi, Mangalore University Economics Association and Ha Ma Na Research Centre. Prof. S. C. Ramesh, Hon. Vice Chancellor, Kannada University, Hampi inaugurated the Seminar. H.H. Swasthi Sri Charakeerthi Battaraka Swameeji, Jain Mutt, Moodbidri graced the occasion. Dr. Bipin Doshi, National Vice President, JITO delivered the Keynote address. Shri. D. Harshendra Kumar, Secretary, SDME Society, Ujire, Dr. G. V. Joshi, former member of Karnataka Planning Board, Dr.B.Yashovarma (Secretary, SDME Society) Dr. Prashanth .H.D (Director, Prasaranga, Kannada University, Hampi), Dr. Joseph, President, AMUCT were the guests of honour.
  • 21-01-2019: One day National Seminar on “Social Development in India: Challenges and Strategies”, organised by the department of Economics of SDM College in association with Department of Development Studies of Hampi Kannada University,  Mangalore University Economics Association and HAMANA Research Centre on 21st January 2019. 12 resource persons, 64 Staff delegates from 33 institutions, 168 student delegates attended the seminar. 24 researchers presented the papers.
