Ujire, July 18 — “English should not be regarded merely as another language. It is the only language that has received global acceptance,” said Raghav Sharma, Public Relations Officer of Belthangady Suddi Bidugade weekly, during the inauguration of the English Literary Association activities for the academic year 2025–26 at Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara (SDM) College, Ujire.
Speaking at the event organized by the Department of English, Sharma emphasized the growing significance of English in the modern world. “While there are many languages spoken across the globe, English has gained a special recognition. Hence, improving one’s proficiency in English is essential,” he remarked.
Sharing his personal journey, he said, “I wasn’t exposed to English extensively during my early education. I took up English Literature along with Journalism during my degree studies. Yet, when I had to translate a Supreme Court judgment from English to another language while working in Delhi, I faced immense difficulty. Reading English newspapers alongside Kannada dailies on a daily basis significantly helps in language acquisition,” he advised.
The program was presided over by Gajanan R. Bhat, Head of the Department of English. Student coordinators from various committees presented their plans for the academic year.
Chandan, President of the Literary Association, along with Coordinator and Assistant Professor Suryanarayana Bhat P., other faculty members, and students were present.
The program began with a welcome speech by third-year B.A. student Gauravi. Shreya Minchinadka compered the event. Anusha, Krishnaveni, and Sushira led the prayer, and second-year B.A. student Sanusha Pinto delivered the vote of thanks.
