Ujire, July 23 — “Journalism students must possess the agility of mercury and a strong investigative spirit to thrive in the field,” said Dr. Bhaskar Hegde, Head of the Department of Journalism at SDM College, Ujire. He was addressing students at the inaugural and orientation program of the Journalism Department’s annual activities for the academic year.
Highlighting the department’s dynamic approach, Dr. Hegde noted that along with classroom learning, students are given ample opportunities for hands-on professional experience. “From reporting college events and producing short films to hosting radio programs, students are encouraged to actively participate in multiple domains. It is their responsibility to take initiative and remain engaged,” he added.
As part of the program, students presented details of various departmental initiatives including First Speech, Weekly Round-Up, Chiguru wall magazine, field reporting, Radio Ninada 90.4 FM community radio, Nammura Varthe TV news bulletin, and the SDM Multimedia Studio. Presentations were given by students Tanushree C.K., Kannika, Pavan, Vamshi, Tanushree, and Rangaswamy.
Third-year student Shreya Minchinadka shared her enriching internship experience. New students introduced themselves, and an introductory video featuring second and third-year students was also screened.
The latest edition of Chiguru wall magazine was unveiled. The trailer of Kaitava, a Kannada short film produced by third-year Journalism students, was also showcased.
Surendra Jain Naravi, a technical staff member of the college, was felicitated for his Instagram reel on agricultural activities, which crossed over 1 lakh views in a single day.
Class representatives Sanjana (first year), Tanushree C.K. (second year), and Chetan (third year), along with faculty members and students of the department, were present.
The program began with a welcome address by final-year student Manya, and ended with a vote of thanks by Sanketh. Kavana, a second-year student, compered the session.
