A Wikipedia editing workshop focusing on the preservation of local language and culture was held on January 24 at Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara (SDM) College, Ujire.
The programme was jointly organised by the Kannada and Journalism Departments of the college in collaboration with the Coastal Wikimedians User Group, Mangaluru. The workshop was inaugurated by former principal T. N. Keshava. Addressing the gathering, chief guest Shailesh Kumar, Head of the Computer Science Department, highlighted that Wikipedia is a reliable source of accurate information, unlike social media platforms that often spread misinformation. He encouraged students to actively participate in correcting and improving content on Wikipedia.
Presiding over the event, Vice Principal Nandakumari emphasised that Wikipedia is a free knowledge platform and urged students to contribute responsibly rather than relying solely on AI tools. Coastal Wikimedians User Group President Dr. Vishwanath Badikana and members Bharatesh Alasandemajalu and Yakshith were present.
Dr. Bhaskara Hegde welcomed the gathering, Dr. K. N. Bojamma proposed the vote of thanks, and the programme was compered by Amrutha, a third-year Kannada optional student.
