Established in 1966

The department is one of the earliest departments established by the institution way back in 1966 offering the subject as an optional subject in B.Sc.

It has been recognized under star college scheme of DBT Govt. of India and also as the Center for Innovative Teaching by DST, Govt. of Karnataka.

Having spacious laboratory well equipped with quality instruments, the department is empowering students through effective teaching learning process imparting quality education which focuses on top class quality jobs.

Department Organizes a unique programme called Lab in Cab (JNAANA VISTAR) where laboratory equipments are carried to rural schools for on the site demo and interaction to popularize basic sciences

Association & Activities

The Physics Students’ Association “Spectra” is a forum that brings together undergraduate students passionate about exploring the wonders of physics. The association aims to nurture curiosity, creativity, and scientific thinking through a variety of activities such as seminars, workshops, quizzes, exhibitions, and outreach programs. It provides a platform for students to discuss ideas, engage in research-oriented projects, and develop skills beyond the classroom. Through collaborative learning and innovation, the association strives to inspire a deeper appreciation of physics and its role in understanding the universe.

  • Department of Physics organized an inauguration of Physics Association “Spectra”, by  Dr. Subrahmanya Bhat, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Electricals and Electronics Engineering, SDMIT, Ujire on 2 July 2025
  • Department of Physics organized an alumni interaction by Mr. Shivaprasad Ghatak, an alumnus of the department who has successfully completed an M.Sc. in Physics and internship at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru on 20 August 2025
  • Department of Physics organised a guest lecture on “Space Funtastic” by Prof. T N Keshav, Former Principal and Retired Professor in Physics, SDM College, Ujire on an account of celebration of National Space Day, on 11 September 2025.
  • Department of Physics conducted an alumni interaction programme by Mr Suresh, 2000 batch student, who is presently working as a teacher in China. He spoke on Education system in China an scope for employment on 25 July 2024
  • Department of Physics conducted a National Level Seminar on Scientific heritage of India in association with Department of Sanskrit, Mathematics, Physics Teachers association and Centre of Indian Knowledge system IKS division New Delhi on 26 February 2024
