In celebration of Gandhi Jayanti, volunteers from the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara College in Ujire, conducted a cleanliness drive on Sunday, October 1.
The drive was launched by Ujire Gram Panchayat Vice President Ravi Baramulu, who said, "First we must cleanse our minds. Then we must keep our surroundings clean. It is our duty as responsible citizens to keep our society clean." The college principal, Dr. B.A. Kumar Hegde, delivered the opening remarks. NSS program coordinators Dr. Mahesh Kumar Shetty H. and Prof. Deepa A.R. were also present. Volunteer Sinchana Kalluraya conducted the program.
NSS volunteers cleaned up litter along the streets and bus stops in Ujire town. They collected about 10 bags of trash. The drive was part of the "Ek Tareek, Ek Ghanta" (One Date, One Hour) cleanliness initiative launched by the Indian government in 2014. The initiative aims to raise awareness about the importance of cleanliness and to encourage people to take action to keep their communities clean.
