The three-day international conference on “Innovations in Chemistry: Materials and Medicines for a Sustainable Society” concluded at SDM College, Ujire, with a strong emphasis on environmentally sustainable practices. The event was organised by the Department of Studies and Research in Chemistry, SDM Postgraduate Centre.
Dr. Sahana Rößler, researcher at the Felix Bloch Institute, University of Leipzig, Germany, highlighted the urgent need to expand eco-friendly initiatives to safeguard the planet, especially in the context of widespread environmentally harmful waste practices, including plastics. She noted that while countries like Germany have excelled in industries such as automobiles, balancing environmental protection with development remains a challenge globally, and greater priority must be given to sustainability.
Retired Professor Dr. B. Shivaram Holla, Mangalore University, emphasised that students with academic insight should enter the research domain after postgraduate studies, rather than immediately opting for industrial or corporate careers, to strengthen higher education and contribute to national progress.
Dr. Sumeesh Eashwaran, Deputy General Manager, Anthem Biosciences Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru, also addressed the gathering. Presiding over the event, Principal Dr. Vishwanatha P. remarked that research in chemistry plays a vital role in building a sustainable society.
The conference sessions were compered by Assistant Professor Dr. Nafeesath P., while convener and Dean Dr. Sowmya B.P. delivered the welcome address. Organising secretary Dr. Shashiprabha was present during the closing ceremony.
Awards were presented for outstanding research papers and poster presentations to students including Shivaram (NITK, Surathkal), Lakshmi J. (JSS Higher Education & Research Academy, Mysuru), Yashik P.B. (NMAM Institute of Technology, Karkala), Amol Satish D. (Syngenta Biosciences, Goa), Swati Divakar (Jain University), and Lavanya (St. Agnes College, Mangaluru).
