Innovate and Protect: A Workshop on Patents, Trademarks & Publishing Rights

Science and spirituality must go hand in hand for the protection and progress of the nation, and the combination of traditional wisdom and modern science could lead to a holistic development of society, said, Dr. Ramakrishna B, Professor, Department of Humanities, Chief Project Leader, EDC, NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte (Deemed to be University), Karkala, during the inauguration of a One-day workshop on ‘Innovate and Protect: A Workshop on Patents, Trademarks & Publishing Rights’, organized by Research and Development Cell, Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara College (Autonomous), Ujire on 18 June 2025. He pointed out that the purpose of science should not be limited to material advancement alone, but also focus on developing wisdom and responsibility in individuals. He urged the researchers to look at science from a moral and ethical perspective and to work toward societal well-being and national unity.
Presiding over the event, Principal of College, Dr. Vishwanatha P, stated that SDM College has always supported science awareness programs and practical-based scientific activities aimed at developing scientific temper among researchers. He emphasized that this is an important responsibility of educational institutions in the country. In this regard, he encouraged faculty to actively engage in research activities and to utilize such platforms for sharing knowledge and exchanging ideas.
The organization and successful execution of the workshop were coordinated by Dr. Sowmya B.P., Director, R & D Cell and Dr. Nefisath P., Organizing Secretary & Member of the R & D Cell. There were four highly engaging and knowledge-rich technical sessions. Dr. Ramakrishna B engaged two sessions on “Patenting to Protect Intellectual Property and IP Management for Start-ups,” Ms. Sucharita Bose Sarkar, Head- IPR, TCG Life Sciences Pvt. Ltd., (Chembiotek), Kolkata, West Bengal, joined virtually and presented an insightful session on “Basics of Patent, Patentability, and Infringement in the Indian Context,” Ms. Sindhu S Patil, Senior Associate, LexAnalytico, Bengaluru engaged the fourth session on “Creating Quality IP Assets and Commercialization”.
The valedictory session of the workshop was presided over by Ms. Nanda Kumari K.P., Vice Principal, who underscored the importance of patents and intellectual property rights and explained how research propels the scientific mind forward. Ms. Sindhu S Patil, the chief guest, emphasized the critical importance of protecting intellectual property. She also assured her continued support and willingness to assist in any future endeavors related to protecting intellectual property and innovation. Dr. Raghavendra S., served as the Master of Ceremony, ensuring the smooth flow of the event. Dr. Nefisath P. welcomed the gathering, Dr. Shashiprabha proposed the vote of thanks, and a total of 89 faculty members from SDM, its sister institutions, and various other colleges benefited from the workshop.
