English: A Globally Respected Language, Says Raghav Sharma at SDM College Literary Inauguration

Ujire, July 18 — “English should not be underestimated as just another language; it is the only language that has earned global recognition,” said Raghav Sharma, Public Relations Officer of Vartha Vahini, a Belthangady-based weekly, while addressing students during the inauguration of the 2025–26 Literary Association of the English Department at SDM College (Autonomous), Ujire.

In his keynote address, Sharma emphasized the increasing relevance of English in a globalized world. Drawing from his own experience, he noted, “Though I was not an English medium student initially, I studied English Literature along with Journalism during my undergraduate years. However, during my professional stint in Delhi, I struggled while translating Supreme Court judgments due to my limited command over the language.”

He encouraged students to read English newspapers alongside Kannada dailies to gradually enhance their language skills. “Engage actively in the department’s initiatives such as the School Adoption Program and Guest Lectures. These not only improve your fluency but also prepare you to thrive in today’s knowledge-driven society,” he added. Sharma also urged students to be mindful of social media usage: “Be a part of the digital world, but don’t let it dominate you.”

Dr. Gajanana R. Bhat, Head of the Department of English, presided over the function. Student coordinators from various departmental committees outlined their plans for the academic year.

Chandan, President of the Literary Association, and faculty member Surya Narayana Bhat P. were also present, along with other lecturers and students.

The program began with a welcome by Gauravi, a final-year B.A. student, and was compered by Shreya Minchinadka. Prayers were led by students Anusha, Krishnaveni, and Sushir, and the vote of thanks was delivered by Sanusha Pinto, a second-year B.A. student.

The event marked a vibrant start to the department’s literary calendar, inspiring students to embrace language learning as a lifelong pursuit.
