Chemistry Department-SDM College, Ujire Celebrates National Chemistry Day with Guest Lecture on Youth for Global Leadership and Innovation in Science

The Department of Chemistry celebrated National Chemistry Day on August 6, 2025, to mark the birth anniversary of the eminent Indian chemist Sir Prafulla Chandra Ray, who is hailed as the Father of Indian Chemistry.

The highlight of the event was a guest lecture on the theme “Youth for Global Leadership and Innovation in Science”, delivered by Dr. Sowmya B. P., Dean of PG Studies, SDM PG Centre, Ujire. The lecture began with an inspiring narrative on the life and legacy of Sir Prafulla Chandra Ray, detailing his childhood, education, groundbreaking research, and contributions to science, industry, and philanthropy. Dr. Sowmya emphasized his pioneering efforts in laying the foundation for the first modern Indian research school in chemistry and establishing Bengal Chemicals, the first pharmaceutical company in India. Dr. Sowmya further encouraged students to pursue higher education and research in science, highlighting the pivotal role of youth in fostering innovation and global leadership in scientific disciplines. Her talk served as a motivational guide for aspiring young scientists, igniting a sense of purpose and commitment toward scientific advancement and national development.

The formal welcome address, anchoring, and vote of thanks were gracefully handled by Lathika of II B.Sc., who ensured the smooth conduct of the program. The celebration was held in Seminar Hall – I under the coordination of Dr. Ganavi D., Event Co-ordinator, Department of Chemistry. The event was conducted with the constant support and guidance of Ms. Nanda Kumari K. P., Vice Principal and Head of the Department of Chemistry. All faculty members and around 100 Chemistry students attended the event and participated enthusiastically.
The celebration served as a fitting tribute to a towering figure in Indian science and reaffirmed the college’s commitment to academic excellence and scientific temper among youth.
