Ujire – “Artificial Intelligence is not reducing employment opportunities; rather, it is generating new avenues for careers,” said Dr. G.S. Tyagaraju, Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at SDM College of Engineering, Ujire. He was the chief guest at the launch of the ‘Stat Explore Association’ activities organized by the Department of Statistics at SDM Postgraduate Centre on Monday.
Dr. Tyagaraju delivered a special lecture on ‘The Role of Statistics in Building Reliable AI Systems’, highlighting the importance of acquiring AI-related skills to remain relevant in the evolving technological landscape. “When computer automation advanced, many lost jobs, but those who developed new skills created innovative career paths. Similarly, students must embrace AI technologies and develop complementary skills to unlock new opportunities,” he said.
He emphasized that AI is an emerging technology that can expand the possibilities within the field of statistics. “Precision is critical in every domain, and statistics provides that accuracy. AI technology can further enhance the reliability and application of statistical insights,” he added.
The programme was presided over by Dr. Soumya B.P., Dean of SDM Postgraduate Centre, who noted that governments, industries, and businesses increasingly rely on statistical data for policy-making and decision-making. He encouraged students to focus on developing statistical and analytical skills to stay competitive.
The event was attended by Dr. Savita Kumari, Head of the Department of Statistics. Prakruti T.P., a second-year M.Sc. student, proposed the vote of thanks.
