Ujire, July 25: Assessment methods that enhance students’ comprehension and learning outcomes must be redesigned to meet the evolving demands of contemporary education, said S. N. Kakatkar, Academic Coordinator of SDM College.
He was inaugurating a one-day Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on “Redefining Higher Education through Outcome-Based Pedagogies”, jointly organized by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and the Research and Development Cell of SDM College for undergraduate and postgraduate faculty members at the SDM Postgraduate Centre on Saturday.
Addressing the gathering, Kakatkar observed that learning outcomes should reflect the expected objectives after students have engaged in discussions, interactive sessions, and expanded their existing knowledge on a subject. He emphasized that, alongside nurturing academic excellence among students, institutions must also reform their assessment practices. Faculty members, he said, should acquire the necessary technical expertise to make the learning process more outcome-oriented and focused on measurable educational objectives.
He further noted that teaching, learning, and assessment methodologies are constantly evolving. Educational institutions should therefore adopt updated pedagogical and evaluation strategies that correspond with emerging technological advancements. Such reforms, he added, would make the learning process more meaningful and effective for students.
Kakatkar also stressed the importance of introducing innovative classroom approaches by discussing subjects through fresh perspectives and thought-provoking questions. Teachers should present familiar concepts in new ways while gradually expanding students’ knowledge base, enabling meaningful learning and more accurate assessment.
Dr. Sandhya R., Assistant Professor at the School of Management Sciences, Chanakya University, Bengaluru, executed the day-long sessions on outcome-based teaching methodologies focusing on diverse pedagogical approaches aimed at improving the precision and effectiveness of academic learning.
Dr. Satheeshchandra S., Secretary of SDM Educational Institutions, was present on the occasion. Mr G. R. Bhat, Coordinator of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell, welcomed the gathering and delivered the introductory remarks. Prof. Vishwanath P., Principal of SDM College, presided over the programme. The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Soumya B. P., Dean of the SDM Postgraduate Centre and Director of the Research and Development Cell. The programme was compered by Dr. Nefisat P., Associate Professor.
